ABSTRACT. This research makes conceptual and methodological contributions to the role of music as a means of structuring everyday experience, the nature of music and the ways in which we position ourselves in relation to others, and the evolutionary adaptive value of music. The purpose of this article is to gain a deeper understanding of the emotional effects of music, the embeddedness of music in the actual contingent conditions of life and thought, and the way in which humans organize musical information. pp. 13–18
