Abstract.This article analyzes the economic and social assumptions, cultural and scientific developments which have led to the emergence and evolution of the press agencies and their role in the development of other media. The article also emphasizes the essential contribution of news agencies in the process of professionalization and modernization of journalism. It presents stages of development of the main news agencies, from the first agency created by Charles Havas in 1835, till the establishment of national agencies and the major news agencies today, which have become the leading providers of information for all the media and one of the greatest news communicators of our time. pp. 157167
