ABSTRACT. On Elbaz’s reading, Malraux’s text suggests that self is not and cannot be defined, and therefore no narrative can encompass it, constituting an ongoing process of redefinition dependent upon the transcendental-historical phenomena which shape it. Autobiography, the story of the self, is the story of the phenomena which continually give birth to that self.
