Impact of Cloud-Based Accounting on the Efficiency of Small and Medium Enterprises

Abstract

Cloud-based accounting has emerged as an important digital technology for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), offering access to accounting functions through internet-based platforms rather than relying exclusively on locally installed systems. This paper examines the impact of cloud-based accounting on SME efficiency, focusing on operational efficiency, financial information availability, cost management, collaboration, and decision-making. Cloud accounting can reduce the need for extensive hardware infrastructure, automate routine accounting processes, provide real-time access to financial information, and facilitate collaboration between business owners, accountants, and other authorized users. These capabilities may help SMEs manage limited financial and human resources more effectively. However, adoption also presents challenges related to data security, privacy, internet dependency, integration, user skills, and vendor reliability. The paper concludes that cloud-based accounting can improve SME efficiency when the technology is appropriately selected, implemented, and supported by effective internal controls, employee training, data-security measures, and management commitment.
